Patsy Fleming, Here and Now!

My Line People series represents the vagaries of the human form with all its oddities. What is normal anyway? My Line People are as normal as we are. One can see in them emotions that we all feel at one time or another. I draw them from models in whom I may see a reflection of love or grief that I have known.

My paintings are also based on line. I begin most of my paintings with lines drawn with India ink and a chopstick. The lines can take the shape of a figure and become more abstract as I work. I add color and more line and go back and forth until I am somewhat satisfied with the way the painting is going.

Khaki and red feature prominently in Here and Now! They symbolize earth and fire. They also represent the current state of parts of the world—Khaki for refugee camps and the dry earth that can grow no food. Red is for war and suffering. I try not to let the crises of our time enter into my work, but they have a way of creeping in.

My photo-art is painting on photographs taken in my travels. The photograph alone is not enough to capture the experience I had when I was shooting it. It has to be enhanced with paint to make it more than just an instant in time. Painting the photograph gives it a truth—my truth about the experience that otherwise would be lost.

About the Artist

I am both a figurative and an abstract painter. My figurative work is abstract; my abstract work can be figurative. I use dramatic combinations of vibrant color and elegant line to create expressive abstract and figurative forms. Color and line are my vehicles for the expression of memory, imagination and a lifetime of witness.

My work related to the AIDS epidemic and my father’s death when I was 10 are experiences that especially deepen my life and my work. Art in a time of crisis. It seems these days we are in a continual state of crisis. I paint with energy and empathy to escape the reality of our lives right now. I catch a moment, catch a lifetime in paint. It is my hope that the observer finds meaning in my art according to his or her own experience and thoughts.
