About the Artist

June Shadoan
This most recent body of work of acrylic on paper and wood represents a departure from the much more controlled oil paintings that preceded it. I have allowed myself to follow my instinct to let paint seemingly explode on a surface. A choreography develops between me and the paint conduit which ultimately produces a dynamic imagery. A sense of agitation and tension prevail.

Painting is an exploration of color and form but also an expression of a universal truth for me as an artist. Vigorous bold strokes of color express a high spirited, joyous vision of life and of creative freedom. Emotion flows openly and brings the viewer along for the ride. In the end the spontaneously delivered elements of these paintings are orchestrated into a coherent visual experience. They represent not only what is immediately apparent to the viewer: the feeling that what you see is what you get, but also an insight into my creative process.

I have always worked intuitively and with conviction. One stroke of paint leads easily to another and another without trepidation. My work proceeds seamlessly with time for contemplation coming at intervals and adjustments made as needed. There are no hidden messages in the work. I have always been drawn to strong color interaction and this, above all else drives the process. It is my hope that the viewer will understand and enjoy the visual journey.

My work is a continuing exploration of paint and its application. The works are experiential, about oil paint, color, texture, form, the intrinsic qualities of the materials, and how these works exist in an environment. Paint is used as a sculptural medium, giving the works a charged physical presence that energizes the space they inhabit.

My works are nonrepresentational. I want them to be experienced instantaneously and physically, and not filtered through language and the thought process required to read narrative works. The heavily textured layers of various colors of oil paint are applied in a loose horizontal pattern. This pattern suggests a controlled restraint. contrasting with the obsessive and lavish application of paint. Underlayers of oil paint are mixed with a wax medium in some works, whereas others are pure oil paint. Colors from underlayers peek through here and there, but the overall final work reads as reductive and monochromatic.

It is important to me that the materials used in my works be organic and speak about the materials, especially the properties of oil paint, its color, texture, and how it shinks as it dries and sometimes leaves a pitted surface. Although the works are nonrepresentational, the theme that emerges is often environmental, suggesting the summer fields, a plowed field in the early spring, a first thaw of winter, and so forth.
