PRESS RELEASE: For Immediate Release
Washington, DC — 1 January 2005. “I just couldn’t resist bringing the talent, spirit and energy of Artomatic 2004 into my gallery. 10 Most Wanted is the result,” says Anne C. Fisher. The exhibition was created in collaboration with Lenny Campello of the Fraser Gallery based on the idea of a multigallery celebration of Artomatic.
Featured in the exhibition are painters John M. Adams, Jean S. Beebe, Andrea Cybyk, and Louise Kennelly, sculptors Aaron Quinn Brophy and Lisa Schumaier, master printer Luis Scotti, photographer Colin Winterbottom and interactive artists Philip Kohn and Frank Warren.
The work in 10 Most Wanted is wonderfully varied and wide-ranging. From Jean S. Beebe’s Free Play, a joyful series of six paintings collaged with evocative childhood found objects and Lisa Schumaier’s playful and touching figurative sculptures, to the powerfully contemplative paintings of John M. Adams, such as Breathing My Own Exhaust, Number Four and Louise Kennelly’s tiny meditative paintings, layered with texture and color, creating depth and mood. From the tension of Andrea Cybyk’s abstract paintings, as she struggles to balance orderliness and chaos to the mythical and lyrical prints of Uruguayan master printer Luis Scotti, in his exquisite silkscreen translations of three paintings by Alvaro Amengual.
And finally from the exquisite cemetery statuary photographs of Colin Winterbottom and the poignant, deconstructed, sculptures of Aaron Quinn Brophy, both artists exploring the fragility of life and the possibilities for transcendence and wholeness, to the unique interactive works of Philip Kohn and Frank Warren. Kohn’s installations The Looking Glass, a state of the art personal “candid camera” for home use and The Story of the Dragon with Seven Heads, a DVD based on his work as a brain researcher are mesmerizing. Warren’s truly original mind is expressed in three works, (301)564-8006, a dial-in voicemail message, Reluctant Oracle, messages in bottles and PostSecrets, audience postcard confessions that combine to create a fascinating installation exploring secrets, mystery and the nature of reality.
The exhibition opens on Saturday, 8 January with a private reception, 6-8pm and continues through Saturday, 29 January. There will be a public reception on Friday, 21 January, 6-8pm. All Canal Square galleries will be open until 8pm.
The Anne C. Fisher Gallery is located in Canal Square, 1054 31st St NW, Mezzanine. Hours: Tu. 12–3pm, Friday and Saturday 12–6pm and by appointment. A portion of the gallery proceeds will be donated to Artomatic. More information at 202.625.7555.
