PRESS RELEASE: For Immediate Release
Washington, DC — 1 April 2005. “In Synchrony, Joanne Kent and June Shadoan demonstrate their passion for paint, for color and for texture combined with an exceptional ability to create an emotional, energetic and interactive experience for the viewer,” states Anne C. Fisher about their upcoming joint exhibition. Synchrony, abstract paintings by Joanne Kent and June Shadoan opens 12 April and continues through 14 May at the Anne C. Fisher Gallery.
Shadoan’s most recent work, represented in Synchrony, is rendered in acrylic on paper and wood and is a departure from her much more controlled oil paintings that preceded it. Here, Shadoan allows herself to follow a deep instinct, letting the paint explode on a surface, creating an exciting, visually sensuous experience. Her vigorous, emotional, bold strokes of color express a high-spirited, joyous vision of life and a sense of creative freedom while looking inward to the creative process.
In Synchrony, Kent continues her exploration of oil paint and its application; its colors, textures, forms and intrinsic qualities. The paintings that result are strikingly monchromatic and sculptural. They are experienced instantaneously and physically. They are jagged, spiky and pitted and have a charged physical presence that energizes the space they inhabit and that creates a powerful urge to touch. Although nonrepresentational, the theme that emerges is often environmental, suggesting late summer fields, a plowed field in early spring, a first thaw of winter.
In celebration of Synchrony, the public is invited to attend an Opening Reception on Friday, 15 April, 6pm–8pm. All Canal Square galleries will be open until 8pm. An Artist Talk will be held on Sunday, 24 April at 2pm. All are welcome. A second Reception for Synchrony to which the public is invited will take place on Friday, 6 May, 6pm–8pm.
