PRESS RELEASE: For Immediate Release

Washington, DC — 7 May 2005. “Natural Selection profoundly echoes both ancient and modern artistic expression in some cultures in which humans create objects from natural materials for connection to human experience, to the natural world and to the divine,” states Anne C. Fisher about this joint exhibition. Natural Selection, abstract paintings by Louise Kennelly and sculpture in wood and other organic materials by Michael Gessner opens 17 May and continues through 11 June at the Anne C. Fisher Gallery.

Kennelly’s paintings are fresh, immediate and spontaneous. They arise from a joy of color, texture and the unexpected twists and turns of the process itself. Energy, intention and ideas meet and mingle with the material world. Kennelly uses natural materials, such as oil paint, beeswax and graphite, applied unpremeditatedly and often with her hands, to stay closely connected to the materials and to the developing painting. She considers the resulting paintings guideposts or reminders for the viewer to remain present in the physical and natural world.

Gessner’s sculptures begin in the process of collecting wood and other organic materials. From these collections, elements begin to guide him to a deeper level of being. The arrangement, combination or modulation of these elements, sometimes minimal, sometimes radical, transform, revealing stories about themselves, both fascinating and mysterious. The resulting works seem exotic, tribal, sacred.

The Opening Reception for Natural Selection to which the public is invited will take place on Friday, 20 May, 6pm–8pm. All Canal Square galleries will be open until 8pm. A second public reception for Natural Selection will be held on Friday, 3 June, 6pm–8pm.
