PRESS RELEASE: For Immediate Release
Washington, DC — 3 June 2005. “Vess and Levine have worked together for years, but In Tandem provides a rare opportunity to see their work interact in an exhibition setting,” states Anne C. Fisher. In Tandem, monotype prints by C.C. Vess and paintings on paper and slate panel by R.E.Levine opens on 17 June and continues through 29 July at the Anne C. Fisher Gallery. An Opening Reception, open to the public, will be held on Friday, 17 June, 6pm–8pm. All Canal Square Galleries will remain open until 8pm on that date.
C.C. Vess works improvisationally in monotype printing. Initiated in fields of color, traces of paths invite investigation, hinting at real and imagined sites. Of particular note in In Tandem are The Tremblor Tryptych and The Element Suite ((Die Mitte der Welt). Die Mitte der Welt invokes earth, air, fire and water with strong overlapping colors shooting up or doubling back on themselves. The Temblor Tryptych imitates rumbling and shifting movement.
For R.E. Levine process is also vital in generating meaning. For example, in her series on black slate panels, her oil crayon markings and exacto knife scrapings result in intriguing, vaguely recognizable shapes. Also of special note in In Tandem is her Passages series. Through the process of using mineral pigments such as malachite, goethite and hematite and the marks of a raked stamp on Nujabi paper, she creates images that resemble landscapes.
